Additional charges filed in Stillwater heroin case
STILLWATER Additional charges have been filed against two people arrested last Friday for heroin possession, Stillwater police said.
The new charges against Basil E. Smith, 55, and Brenda J. Smith, 55, both of Birch Lane, Saratoga Hills Mobile Home Park, were the result of police executing a search warrant on Friday and finding heroin that was packaged for sale, in an area accessible to a 5-year-old child who was in the residence when police entered. Police said the child was turned over to a family member, and Saratoga County Child Protective Services is investigating.
Both Smiths were charged with one new count of third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and one count of endangering the welfare of a child, a class A misdemeanor.
Both were also charged with multiple drug possession charges Friday, as was a third person. The investigation and ensuing arrests have resulted in a total of 15 class B felony and eight class A misdemeanor charges, police said.
The Stillwater Police Department was assisted by the Saratoga County sheriff’s narcotics unit, state police and Saratoga County Probation.
