Ex-Schenectady man faces prison for benefits fraud
SCHENECTADY A former city man faces up to three years in state prison after admitting Friday to illegally taking more than $10,000 in unemployment benefits while he was employed.
Matthew D. Laga, 32, now of Hunter, Greene County, pleaded guilty in Schenectady County Court to one count of fourth-degree grand larceny, a felony.
Laga admitted to taking the benefits from March to December 2012 when he lived in Schenectady. All the while, he worked under the table at a pizza shop and a masonry business.
Laga said in court Friday that he realizes that what he did was a mistake.
In return for his plea, Laga is to receive 18 months to three years in state prison at his sentencing. He also must repay the state Department of Labor a total of $10,798.
Laga was previously convicted of third-degree robbery in Greene County in 2005.
