Albany cidery is first licensed by state

— Nine Pin Cider Works in Albany is officially the state’s first licensed farm cidery.

Nine Pin Cider is operated by Alejandro del Peral and family, and produces hard cider from apples on farms in the Capital Region and the Hudson Valley. The cider shop is located at 929 Broadway in downtown Albany.

In October, Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed legislation into law that established a new license for farm cideries, which went into effect on Jan. 15.

The new license is an effort by Cuomo to grow the agriculture industry in New York.

“New York state’s climate gives apple producers an outstanding environment to grow great apples for cider making,” del Peral said. “It’s an incredible honor to become the state’s first licensed cidery here in downtown Albany under the new Farm Cideries Law.”

The new license enables farm cideries to manufacture and sell cider made from apples and other fruits grown in the state. Cideries can provide a tasting room and sell products by the pint.

The law also increases the limit on cider’s alcohol content from 7 percent to 8.5 percent. Farm cideries can sell beer, wine and other state products.

Schoharie farmer and acting state agriculture Commissioner Richard Ball said the new license is a win for local farmers and boosts the demand for apples in the state.

“New York’s apple industry had one of its best years ever in 2013 and this new license … will help the industry expand the reach of its world-class agriculture products even further,” Ball said. “This new license will create even more of a need for New York apples and in turn will create a new marketplace for New York apple growers.”
