— New Yorkers can merge lifetime recreation or sporting licenses with their state driver’s license creating a new all-in-one card, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Wednesday.

State residents who purchase a lifetime sporting license or complete boating safety certification training can have “adventure” icons on their driver’s license, rather than a separate card.

“We will offer lifetime state passes/licenses to current annual license holders,” Cuomo said during a press conference at the Capitol. “It will actually save money in the long run for the person buying the annual passes and it will generate significant revenue for the state.”

People who already have a lifetime sporting license or boating certificate can choose to get a new driver’s license immediately through the Department of Motor Vehicles for a $12.50 fee. There would be no charge for licenses up for renewal.

The initiative is part of a push by Cuomo to promote tourism in upstate New York. People who register for a lifetime hunting, fishing or parks license this year would also receive a free, custom license plate advertising the tourism industry.

People can choose from nine different license plates. The plates can be personalized to include a photo of a fish, deer or other animal, along with special backgrounds and I LOVE NY slogans.

New York tourism is a $100 billion industry and the fifth largest employer in the state, Cuomo said.

“When it comes to tourism we are trying to attract those 50 million tourists that are visiting New York City…and attracting them north. Hunting and fishing is one of the things that does that,” Cuomo said. “This is about generating revenue for the state.”
