Wrestling: Plainsmen win Class A title

LATHAM — State finalist Levi Ashley (195 pounds) and Jesse Porter (152 pounds) both won their third titles, and Kevin Parker (138) got his second Saturday as Shenendehowa won the Division 1, Class 1 (Class A) wrestling tournament at Shaker High School.

The Plainsmen will take a full complement of 15 wrestlers to this weekend’s state qualifiers, as they had a top-six finisher in every weight class in the nine-team field.

Anthony Dinallo (145) also reached the finals, with five teammates finishing third as the Plainsmen outscored Columbia by 181⁄2 points for the team title.

Columbia went 3-for-7 in the finals, with Kyle Greene (132) and Angelo Kress (160) both winning for the third time, and Jimmy Devine coming out on top at 145.

Guilderland had four champions, three from No. 2 seeds, as David Wolanski won at 99, Mike Lainhart took a forfeit over four-time runner-up Dominic Inzana of Saratoga Springs at 120, Andy Cummings beat top-seeded Ditaye Douglas of Schenectady at 170 and Josh LoGiudice (106) got his second title.

Third-place team finisher Colonie also had four champs in repeater Golan Cohen (113), Isaiah Cooks (182), Wayne Burt (195) and Austin DiCerbo (285).

Shaker senior Blake Retell won his fourth title.

SPARTANS WIN

BURNT HILLS — Homestanding Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake had seven champions and three other finalists to end Queensbury’s four-year run in the Division 1, Class 2 (Class B) tournament.

The finals got off to a good start for the Spartans, when Christian Gramuglia beat two-time champ Anthony Sgorrano of South Glens Falls at 99.

Joey Butler (145) and Jake Ashcraft (170) won their titles, with Mason Rabideau (132), Nate Sisler (160), Nico Fragale (220) and Roz Warren (285) also winning.

The Spartans will send 15 to the state qualifier.

Amsterdam senior Brandon Lapi (138) won his fifth title, and set the school record for varsity wins in the process.

Chris Velazquez (106) and Marcus Torres (182) also won titles for the Rams.

GRANVILLE — Led by unbeaten freshman 145 champ Jason Hoffman, Hadley-Luzerne/Lake George won the Division 2, Class 2 (Class C) title.

Hoffman was one of six War Eagles to win a title, as 13 HL/LG wrestlers earned spots for the state qualifier.

Other winners included state champ Luis Weierbach of Hoosick Falls, sectional champ Garon LeClair and Tyler Mulcahy of Corinth and Granville’s Nathaniel Palmer and Brad Perry.

WARRENSBURG — Salem had five winners, led by five-time champ Carter Merecki at 132, to win the Division 2, Class 3 (Class D) team title.

Galway was third, with Jordan Sartin (120) winning, and both Dillan Paszlewski (99) and Steven Culbert (145) reaching the finals.

Fourth-place Canajoharie/FortPlain had winners in Jon Payack (106) and Jordan Griswold (170); and fifth-place Duanesburg had champs in Zack Lawrence (99), Connor Lawrence (his fourth, at 160) and Andy Mollevik.
