College hockey: Doherty lifts Yale past RPI in OT

TROY — Mike Doherty scored the game-winning goal on a power play 59 seconds into overtime Friday night as Yale rallied from a 2-1 deficit to defeat Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, 3-2, in an ECAC Hockey game at Houston Field House.

The Engineers haven’t won an overtime game this season, falling to 0-2-4. Yale goalie Alex Lyon stopped 35 shots to thwart the Engineers (11-12-4, 5-7-3 ECACH), who have scored just 22 goals in their last 12 games.

The Engineers came out of the first period with a 2-1 lead on goals by Ryan Haggerty, his 22nd of the season, and Mike Zalewski.

But Yale (12-6-4, 7-5-3 ECACH) pulled even on a power-play goal by Tommy Fallen at 7:57 of the third period, setting the stage for Doherty’s game-winner, which came 38 seconds after Guy Leboeuf went off for boarding 21 seconds into overtime.

RPI will host Brown in ahe annual Big Red Freakout game tonight at 7.

NEW HAVEN. Conn. — Stefanie Thomson scored her ninth and 10th goals of the season to lead the Dutchwomen to a victory over the Bulldogs at Ingalls Rink.

Thomson moved into second place in program history for career power-play goals by registering her eighth on the Dutchwomen’s opening goal. The power-play goal was her seventh of the year, pulling her into a tie for the national lead.

Shenae Lundberg stopped 28 shots for Union (9-19-1, 4-13-0 ECAC), allowing just a third-period goal.

Yale fell to 5-8-4 in the league and 7-14-3 overall.
