Clifton Park woman wins $100,000 after dropping 175 pounds
CLIFTON PARK Tumi Oguntala lost 175 pounds but gained $100,000 during her stint on this season’s “The Biggest Loser.”
Even though the Clifton Park woman was voted off the NBC reality show early, she was still in the running for a cash prize that would go to the biggest “at-home” loser. As demonstrated by Tuesday night’s finale, getting voted off the show did not stop her momentum.
Oguntala, 41, weighed 319 pounds when the current season of the show began filming. When she was voted off in week 11 (this episode aired Jan. 7), she weighted in at 221 pounds for a whopping 98-pound weight loss. And then she kept going.
During Tuesday night’s live finale, Oguntala walked onto The Biggest Loser stage in a ribbed coral dress that flaunted her much slimmer figure. All 15 contestants on the show were reunited for the final episode and weighed for one last time in front of a national audience. Oguntala weighed in at 144 pounds, breaking the record for the largest percentage of weight lost by an at-home contestant on the show. She has lost 175 pounds overall since starting the show.
Now that the show is over, she has plans to run her first marathon and to always keep a race on her calendar so that she is regularly running, she said on her Facebook page Tuesday.
Oguntala was voted off the show because the other contestants thought she posed more of a threat than another contestant. Last month, she told “The Today Show” that before going on “The Biggest Loser” she felt destined to die early.
“I didn’t want to have children because of that,” she said. “I thought my weight would eventually do me in and now I’m leaving here with my life, with my future, with so much in front of me. In doing that, I feel like I’ve proven that I’m worthy to be a mom and that I’ll love whatever children I’ll have enough to do this, because I don’t want to die and leave children behind like my mom did. I’m going to do it as soon as I get married. I’m going to start and that’s because I came here.”
Contestant Rachel Frederickson was crowned the Biggest Loser during Tuesday’s finale. She weighed 260 pounds when she started on the show and revealed a 105-pound figure during Tuesday’s finale, making her the tiniest loser in “Biggest Loser” history. Her win drew intense scrutiny from some viewers who said she looked “too skinny” and called her transformation too extreme.
