Editorial: Father Hogan an inspiration

After an article appeared earlier this week about the death of Father Michael J. Hogan, someone in our newsroom was overheard commenting, "I wish I knew him."

What more fitting tribute to a man who filled his life doing so many things to help other people than a stranger who never met him being moved by his passion and dedication and goodness.

The list of charities and civic groups Father Hogan served in the Schenectady area during his 49 years as a priest is long and varied. It's a fitting tribute to his humility that his obituary lists none of them.

Because it's not his resume that endeared him to people, that made people want to be in his presence, that made strangers want to know him. It's the example he set just by being the person he was. Father Hogan's legacy won't be all he did. It will be what he demonstrated can be done with an open heart and a willing spirit.

If we can all take just a little bit of that and apply it to our own lives, then in a way, we can say we knew him.
