HAUPPAUGE, N.Y. — Police on Long Island say two people are charged with stealing about 650 gallons of used cooking oil from restaurants.

Suffolk County police say Domingo Santos and his girlfriend, Vanessa Liriano, both of Yonkers, were arrested Sunday in Hauppauge (HAH'-pawg).

Used cooking oil can be refined and sold as bio-fuel. Police say the 650 gallons is worth about $2,000.

Authorities say an officer saw Santos withdrawing used cooking oil from a canister behind a restaurant. They say the same vehicle had been used at other oil-theft locations throughout Suffolk County.

The two were awaiting arraignment Monday on charges of petit larceny, and possession of stolen property and burglary tools.

Information on their attorneys was not immediately available.
