Schenectady council needs a true independent voice

Text Size: A | A

The praise that former-Schenectady City Councilman Carl Erikson has received across the aisle after he resigned from the council a couple of weeks ago has been more than warranted. In fact, Erikson has received so much recognition as having been a competent and respectable leader from colleagues and members of the general public that there is nothing more for me to add, except to say that he will be missed. Although well written; enrollment, patronage, and demographics make your entreaty hollow and useless. I want both parties to put up folks; smarter than their chairmen, who can balance their own egos, and who can initiate, communicate, and bring plans to completion. Once elected, they must work to overcome the useless idiocies of special ed and the horrid type a lady.

For clarification, I do not belong to, or am a member of any political party. I am registered as a blank (no party) and without doing much research am probably the only elected member of the city council ever to claim that designation. I was endorsed by the GOP and Alliance Parties in 2011. The Alliance party is an independent petition process to get a line on the ballot.
I was part of the 2005 effort with Pat Z. and we did a write in campaign of which I led the ticket and garnered almost 600 votes but was not nearly enough. Bottom line is imo to have any chance of winning a seat you need 2 endorsements.....a Major party and a minor party, Conservative, Working Family or Independence. The other option for a 2nd line is an Independent Party petition such as the Alliance Party. I am very proud with my 2 lines to have come within 160 total votes of Denise Brucker who garnered 4 lines and led the council ticket in Nov of 2011. Lastly, I have never received a call from either of the party heads that endorsed me, to try and lead me in any particular direction.

The op-ed piece sounded informed, but for any ardent observer of Schenectady politics, it really was short on substance. It almost appeared that the writer was making an attempt to play to the audience. There was considerable misinformation throughout the piece.
