— New York state has set aside $3 million to buy air conditioners for low-income residents whose medical problems could be worsened by high summer temperatures.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced the funding Monday. Residents are encouraged to apply for the assistance program soon so the air conditioning units can be installed before summertime.

To be eligible residents must meet income guidelines, have a household member who has a medical condition impacted by extreme heat, and must have documentation from a health care provider.

Applications may be submitted to local social service departments.

How about helping the tax payer with air conditioners or just reducing taxes. Just saying they dont have much left in their check when the state gets done.

The "taxpayer" gets help with nothing in this state. Just look at the way they let National Grid rip us off us this winter. Excluding some of the elderly that genuinely need help, let's supply a bunch of bums with an air conditoner so they can sit at home all day with the air blasting and the front door open.

when you say bums who are u referring to memny? What makes one a bum because they have low-income and medical needs that makes them a bum???? The elderly would be considered low-income that can also apply for this so dont be so simple-minded. Think before you say it might just make more sense.

With all due respect poorlaw, I've put plenty of thought into how this system works. I've been busting my butt working continually for 20+ years, I live alone, have a mortgage and all the typical expenses, I have had cancer twice in the past 9 years and you know who helped me?? That's right, NOBODY. I won't waste time arguing with a liberal minded person, which I admittedly am not. I will say that I don't have cable or a cell phone but you can bet that the people who apply for this assistance do.
