— Former Gloversville Fire Chief Doug Edwards died this weekend following an accident in the city Friday.

Fire Department officials on Sunday confirmed his death. Capt. Brandt Minkler, president of the department’s union, praised Edwards as a devoted firefighter who continued to volunteer with a crew in Mayfield following his retirement in 2010.

“It’s both a great personal and professional loss for our membership,” he said. “He lived the profession and emulated everything a firefighter is supposed to be. It was a great loss.”

Fire Chief Beth Whitman-Putnam, who replaced Edwards as chief in 2011, couldn’t be reached for comment Sunday. City police provided no details about the crash other than to say it remains under investigation.
