Thanks for the Lenten meals

Too many people write opinions of complaints and not enough “thank yous.” This is to thank the Schonowee Fire Department Auxiliary and firefighters and anyone else who volunteers to make the delicious meals they put out during the Lenten season.

They volunteer their time, not only to cook the food, but also to clean up, which takes up many hours of their time. To give up their time so that we can have great meals is exemplary of them.

Again, I thank all of you and, I might also add, keep up the good work. We enjoy all your Friday meals.

If not utilities, who is to blame for high National Grid bills?

Re the April 12 letter, “Don’t blame utilities, turn down the heat!” submitted by Sandra Natale: Normally I read opinion letters with tongue in cheek and just say everyone is entitled to their opinions.

However, we always keep our heat down — 66 [degrees in the] daytime; 60 [degrees in the] nighttime. The only time our temperature goes up is when we receive our National Grid bill! I really don’t know who to blame. I only know the facts as I see them on our bill. On our March 24, bill, National Grid listed our comparative electric and gas usage, and this is what we saw:

Electric usage March 2013 21.4 kWh cost: $2.68;

Electric usage March 2014 21.6 kWh cost: $5.30.

Without the use of calculus, algebra or whatever other math that would apply, I calculate that my electric cost increased $2.68 from March 2013 to $5.30 March 2014 — almost double — and we did keep our thermostat down as suggested. Although I must admit, we did use .2 more kWh in March 2014. Mea Culpa!

Now let's look at the natural gas end of things:

Gas usage March 2013 4.0 therms cost $3.92

Gas usage March 2014 4.7 therms cost $4.79.

In all fairness we did use .7 therms more during March 2014 — I guess we just were a little colder this year and used the gas fireplace more often. And who can hate National Grid? After all, it was only a $0.87 increase in the cost of a therm this year.

As to the posit, “Don’t blame utilities, turn down the heat,” I would like someone to tell me who to blame and how we can turn up the heat on whoever it is that is to blame so we can put an end to this unnecessary price gouging over which we seem to have no control.

We are just so many sheep being led to the slaughter without so much as a “baa,” or more to the point, a "bah!" And I think that I just used more electric kWs having my computer on to send this. But it was worth it to get my bah noted!
