— State Sen. Cecilia Tkaczyk, D-Duanesburg, will host a forum Tuesday on leveraging the Albany nanocollege’s ties in Utica to boost economic development and job creation.

The public forum will zero in on the College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering and how the college’s push into Utica will create high-tech opportunities in the Mohawk Valley.

“We have the opportunity to create a high-tech corridor along the state Thruway, from SUNY’s College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering in Albany to the SUNY Institute of Technology at Utica/Rome,” Tkaczyk said.

The forum will be held on Tuesday, April 22 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Fulton-Montgomery Community College in Johnstown. It is free and open to the public.

The State University of New York Board of Trustees approved a merger between CNSE and SUNYIT last month, following CNSE’s divorce from the University at Albany in July.

Combining the two schools by January 2015 will expand academic offerings at both campuses and establish nanocollege CEO Alain Kaloyeros as chief executive of the new SUNY school.

Tkaczyk’s forum will discuss what the merger means for New York’s booming tech sector and how to maximize on opportunities created by the new institution. Panelists include Robert Geer, acting president of SUNYIT, Dustin Swanger, President of Fulton-Montgomery Community College, and other education officials.

Kaloyeros and Gov. Andrew Cuomo led the development of a $125 million computer-chip commercialization center at SUNYIT, which will be completed by the end of the year. Six technology companies, including IBM, invested $1.5 billion to partner on research and development at the facility.

“By working with the stakeholders I hope to develop a plan to maximize the economic development and job creation potential of the Mohawk Valley high-tech corridor,” Tkaczyk said.
