— A growing New Jersey food distributor is trying to buy an Amsterdam warehouse formerly occupied by Quandt’s Foodservice Distribution. If it succeeds, it could mean 100 new jobs for the city that just lost 110 jobs from the US Foods buyout of Quandt’s last fall.

Driscoll Foods owner Tim Driscoll says he’s hopeful a deal will close soon on the facility at 105 Quist Road.

“We’ve already hired about four or five people up there in anticipation that it’s going to happen,” he said. “But I don’t know for sure yet. It depends on a lot of things.”

Driscoll said the Amsterdam warehouse would be an ideal spot for the growing business since it offers freezer, refrigerator and ambient storage space and would allow the company to move into a new market.

Driscoll Foods typically doesn’t deliver outside a 120-mile radius from its Clifton facility, which is about 170 miles from Amsterdam.

“This move allows us to be able to stretch ourselves further in New York while hiring New York residents to help us do so,” Driscoll said in an email. “Also, we are an active New York state bidder and this puts us closer to some of our New York state customers.”

Driscoll said the new facility would likely employ up to 100 local people. The hiring process would take about three years to reach full capacity, he added.

Still, he’s unsure when the deal will close and when Driscoll would move into the facility, which Montgomery County economic development officials have been marketing ever since Quandt’s announced it was closing last year. Montgomery County Economic Development Director Ken Rose did not return a call for comment Tuesday.

Last fall, national food distribution company US Foods acquired Quandt’s, a nearly century-old, family-owned business, with plans to consolidate the entire operation into its existing US Foods distribution facility in Clifton Park. Neither company said anything at the time about what would happen to Quandt’s 110 employees.
