Baseball: Lions pull out win in ninth

Scott Voelker’s three-run double in the bottom of the ninth inning gave Mekeel Christian Academy an 11-10 win over Canajoharie in a Western Athletic Conference game Monday.

The Lions’ 7-8-9 batters reached to load the bases in the ninth, setting the table for Voelker’s game-winning hit.

Dan Gregory had a bases-clearing double in the fourth, and Rhein Zeronda had an RBI single in the eighth inning to extend the game for Mekeel (2-1, 3-2).

Jason Winsman ripped a two-run single in the top of the seventh inning to force extra innings for Canajoharie (1-2).

Kiernan Briggs singled three times and stole three bases, Drew Furreno had three singles, three stolen bases and two RBI, and Eric Orologio drilled a two-run homer, driving in three runs overall, to propel Fort Plain over Duanesburg, 5-1.

Corey Hommel struck out 10 and tossed a two-hit shutout to help Shenendehowa blank Ballston Spa, 9-0, in the Suburban Council.

The Plainsmen backed Hommel with a five-run outburst in the fifth inning.

Matt Drumm drove in four runs on three hits, including a homer in the fourth inning and a double in the seventh.

Justin Yurchak added a two-run double for Shenendehowa.

Ben Contento plated four runs with a double and a single, and Ryan Osterhouat added a double and two singles to power Colonie over Columbia, 12-3.

Contento also pitched the first five-plus innings for the 2-1, 3-1 Garnet Raiders. Kevin Smith singled twice for 2-1, 3-1 Columbia.

Mohonasen scored all five of its runs in the seventh inning to beat Averill Park, 5-1.

Justin Cullum drove in four runs with a home run and single for the Mighty Warriors.

Danny Maynard (triple, single) and Josh Quesada (two singles) backed Josh Butler’s two-hitter over five innings as Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake stopped Shaker, 6-4.

Zach Formica belted a two-run homer, and Nick Bruno struck out five over five innings in Guilderland’s 5-4 win over Bethlehem.

Jake Smith and Tim McGinn each delivered two singles for the 1-2 Eagles.

Garrett Whitley’s four hits led Niskayuna over Saratoga Springs, 8-7.

Devin Coffey had four hits, while Jordan Prehoda and Brendan Coffey added three apiece for the Blue Streaks.

In the completion of last Friday’s suspended Big 10 game, Nick Schmid’s RBI single in the bottom of the ninth sparked Schenectady past LaSalle, 4-3.

Jordan Bernacet doubled and singled for the Patriots. Jason Rose singled twice, and Jake Bernardo struck out 13 for the Cadets.

In the regularly scheduled game, Joe Germinerio tripled and doubled, and Justin Germain added a double and a single to catapult LaSalle past Schenectady, 13-2. The Cadets improved to 3-1 and 3-2. Schenectady drops to 3-1.

Jeremy Glazer struck out 15 and tossed a three-hit shutout in Catholic Central’s 14-0 win over Note Dame-Bishop Gibbons.

Nick Hansen drove in five runs for the 2-2 Crusaders. Daniel Asselin had two singles for the 0-4 Golden Knights.

Scotia-Glenville banged out 19 hits in a 20-5 Foothills Council win over Glens Falls.

Luke Mancini (double, homer, two RBI), Nick Thomas (triple, single, five RBI) and Marty McCollum (triple, double, five RBI) led the high-powered Tartans’ offense.

Broadalbin-Perth put the game away with 12 runs in the seventh inning en route to a 19-9 win over host Hudson Falls.

Zach Morreale went 5-for-5 with a double and three RBI, and Luigi Magliocca chipped in with three hits and three runs scored for the Patriots. Brad Wood had three hits, and Jacob Lynch produced two hits and an RBI for the Tigers.

Matt Szurek (two doubles, single) and Connor Rodecker (double, two singles) combined for five RBI, and Adam Caputo chipped in with three singles to carry Johnstown to a 10-0 shutout of South Glens Falls.

Zack Parsons, Brett Rodriguez and Kyle Chambers combined on a no-hitter as Queensbury blanked Gloversville, 18-0.

The Spartans produced 18 hits, led by Parsons (3-for-4, two RBI), Eric Wettersten (3-for-3), Ryan Flansburg (two hits), Eric Daley (two hits) and Joe Marasco (two hits).

John Cooney struck out 12 and helped his own cause with an RBI double to lift Hoosic Valley (5-0) over Watervliet, 5-1, in a non-league game.

James Griffin had 10 strikeouts and an RBI single for Watervliet.

AJ Cioffi went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI, and Jesse Curtin went 2-for-4 with a triple and a single to help Cohoes beat Coxsackie, 8-3.

Zack Shippee had three hits and five RBI to pace Corinth past Mechanicville, 15-1.

The Tomahawks erupted for 11 runs in the first inning. Blake Basmajian added three hits and two RBI for Corinth.

Freshman Dalton Esposito belted a walk-off homer in the seventh inning to lift 3-0 Voorheesville over Albany Academy, 7-6.

Carter Knapeck had two-run single for the 0-1 Cadets.
