— City police arrested a local man on a gang assault charge after he was allegedly part of a group that pummeled a man on the corner of Putnam Street and Caroline Street early Sunday morning.

Jeffrey L. Carpenter, 25, was charged with felony gang assault, in addition to the misdemeanor charges of resisting arrest and obstructing governmental administration. He was remanded to the Saratoga County Jail where he's being held without bail.

Investigators were on Gardner Alley for an unrelated call when they received a report of a fight in progress at the intersection around 4:30 a.m. Officers moved toward Putnam Street where they observed a small group punching and kicking a man on the ground.

As police approached, the group scattered. Carpenter, however, was yolked by police and placed under arrest.

An investigation into the assault continues. The man injured in the attack was later taken to Saratoga Hospital where his condition was unclear.
