— Union College's Dutchmen will have a parade fit for champions Thursday.

City officials are working with the college to iron out details, but Mayor Gary McCarthy confirmed the parade to honor the NCAA men's ice hockey champs will fall on late Thursday afternoon. The time slot for the procession will fall between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m., but an exact starting time has not yet been determined.

Also being worked out is where the parade will start on the campus and the path it'll take down to City Hall, slightly less than a mile away. McCarthy said many of the particulars are still under discussion.

“No details have been worked out yet,” he said today.

The victory lap through the city will occur before the team's year-end banquet on Thursday evening.

The Dutchmen defeated the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers 7-4 on Saturday. The national championship is viewed as a monumental accomplishment for the small liberal arts college, which doesn't give out athletic scholarships and has about 2,200 undergraduate students.

Throughout the season, the Dutchmen gained a reputation for their strong work ethic, solid character and bonds as a team. They capped off their monumental season winning their last 12 contests and going 17 consecutive games without a loss.

Seriously - Thursday evening? I hope the mayor has the courtesy NOT to take it by St John's Church as this is Holy Thursday. St Anthony's parishioners are joining St John's and they will be missing their own church that night, too.
