Softball: Lady Sabres end Raiders' hex

Senior Lauren Mahar threw a two-hitter, and freshman catcher Taylor Dillenbeck delivered a a two-run double to cap a four-run seventh inning Friday as Schalmont beat Mechanicville, 4-0, in a Colonial Council softball game.

The last time the Lady Sabres beat the perennial league and sectional power was in 2003. That win was the 300th for former coach Rich Pepe.

“Lauren was on,” said Schalmont coach Eric Lybrand. “She had never beaten Mechanicville, and this was her last chance.”

Mahar, who recently committed to RIT, struck out six in getting her seventh career shutout as the Lady Sabres opened their season with a big win.

Amy Thompson’s ground out scored the first run in the seventh, and Danielle Motyka made it 2-0 with and RBI single before Dillenbeck delivered her two-run double.

Mechanicville pitcher Kirsytn Alonzo gave up only five hits and struck out 10. Erin Maloney had both hits for 0-2 Mechanicville,

Junior Danielle Mcomber threw her first no-hitter and fanned 10 as Cohoes got to 4-0 in the Colonial with a 15-0 win over Voorheesville.

Lily Sencer led the Lady Tigers 14-hit offense with three singles.

Kat Weingarten finished with a two-hitter as Cobleskill-Richmondville edged Lansingburgh, 2-1 in the Colonial. Ashlen Blake had both Lansingburgh hits.

Bethlehem scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, capped by Brooke Corbett’s game-winning single, to edge Shenendehowa, 11-10, in the Suburban Council.

Emma Downing had three hits, two RBI and scored two runs for Bethlehem, which also got three base hits from Addison Myers.

Brook Zekker belted a three-run homer, and Erubc Buckley drove in three runs for Shenendehowa.

Bri Skpowski cracked two doubles, and both Brittany Ryan and Erin Sgambelluri added two hits as Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake downed Columbia, 9-3.

The Lady Spartans are off to a 2-0 start under new head coach Kevin DeBonis.

Gabriela Marino and Victoria Rathwell both had a pair of hits as Guilderland topped Niskayuna, 7-2, in the Suburban.

Winning pitcher Felicia Snyder had a triple and two singles, and drove in two runs, as unbeaten Galway topped Canajoharie, 16-5, in the Western Athletic Conference.

Jessica Freebern added four hits, and Sabrina Williams had a triple and pair of doubles for the 3-0 Lady Eagles,

Lauren Balfe tripled and singled for Canajoharie, which also got a pair of singles from both Brittany Pitonza and Shy Logan.

Winning pitcher Hunter Levesque, the returning Big 10 MVP, hit an RBI triple in the eighth inning to give Troy a 5-4 win over city rival Catholic Central.

Lexi Lewis added a solo homer for the reigning league and Class A champions.

Reigning Class C champion Greenwich picked up its first win of the season, beating Granville, 5-2, in the Wasaren League behind the five-hit, 10-strikeout pitching of freshman Rachel Hall.

Cali Nolan’s two-run double was the big hit in a five-run first inning for the 1-2 Witches.

Chelsea drove in four runs with a pair of singles in a nine-run third inning as Hoosick Falls beat Cambridge, 11-2, in the Wasaren,

Ange Stephano homered and singled to lead Loudonville Christian School past Waterford-Halfmoon, 13-3, in the Central Hudson Valley League.
