Don't scrap Spa City plan yet

Saratoga Springs Mayor Joanne Yepsen hasn’t given up on a plan to strengthen the struggling Beekman Street Arts District by expanding it. That’s good news.

The city Planning Board voted last month against endorsing the expansion plan, in part because of limited parking in the neighborhood, but Yepsen is exploring a way to address both the parking issue and another ticklish one for some residents: a small but successful metal scrap business down Cobb Alley from Beekman Street. It hardly fits in a residential neighborhood, but has been there for as long as anyone can remember.

That’s where Yepsen’s plan comes in: She wants to give the scrap yard owners a piece of land elsewhere in the city to set up shop, or buy them out. Provided the land swap doesn’t burden another residential neighborhood, or the price isn’t too steep, Yepsen should go for it.

And the City Council should go for an expanded arts district.
