The Schenectady Police Department is advising people to beware of an ongoing phone scam in which callers are claiming to be from a division of National Grid collecting overdue bills.

The calls, primarily to area businesses, claim that that a utility bill is overdue and, if not paid within a few hours and threaten to shut off power. In some cases, the callers tell the business to purchase green dot pre-paid credit card or cards and call them back to give them certain numbers from the purchased cards.

City police say people should call National Grid directly to confirm the status of their account.
