— Police are trying to find out where a second-grader got the unloaded handgun he brought to his Syracuse elementary school and showed to a friend in the lunchroom.

Syracuse City School District officials tell local media that the 8-year-old student brought the .22-caliber gun to McKinley-Brighton Elementary School on Tuesday. They say he and a friend were playing with the gun in the lunchroom when a staff member spotted the weapon and took it away.

Officials say the gun was unloaded

Syracuse police were called and are investigating the incident. No arrests have been announced.

A school district official says the district is reviewing its safety protocols.
