New work 'Echo' on program at SPAC
Martha Graham company coming June 12
SARATOGA SPRINGS The Martha Graham Dance Company will present “Echo,” a new work by choreographer Andonis Foniadakis, alongside classic Graham works “Appalachian Spring” and “The Rite of Spring” during its June 12 performance at Saratoga Performing Arts Center.
“Echo,” commissioned by the Martha Graham Dance Company, is a contemporary reflection on the Greek myth of Narcissus and Echo. It had its world premiere on March 14 at the New York City Center during the company’s spring season.
This high-velocity ballet is for six dancers, featuring an original score by Foniadakis’ longtime collaborator Julien Tarride and costumes by Anastasios Sofroniou.
Foniadak is an award-winning Paris-based choreographer whose previous collaborations have included commissions for Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet, Geneva Ballet and Lyon Opera Ballet, among many others. Most recently, he was the movement coordinator for Darren Aronofsky’s new film, “Noah.” A native of Crete, Greece, Foniadakis is now based in France where he has his own dance company, Apotosoma.
Foniadakis’s “Echo” shares the program with previously announced Graham works “Appalachian Spring” and “The Rite of Spring.” All three works will have their SPAC debut for this performance which will serve as the kick-off to Saratoga Arts Fest 2014.
