FORT DRUM — Military officials say a soldier in the 10th Mountain Division's Louisiana-based brigade combat team has died in Afghanistan.

Officials at the division's headquarters in Fort Drum in northern New York say 44-year-old Sgt. William D. Brown III of Franklin, N.C., died in a noncombat-related incident last Thursday in Gamberi. Details of his death haven't been released.

Brown was a health care specialist in the Fort Polk-based 94th Brigade Support Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team.

He joined the Army in May 2010. After completing training at Fort Jackson, S.C., he was assigned to Fort Sam Houston in Texas. Brown arrived at Fort Polk in December 2012.

Brown deployed with his unit to Afghanistan last July.

The 10th Mountain Division's other three brigade combat teams are based at Fort Drum.
