COLONIE The third time was indeed the charm for Coccadotts Cake Shop.
With about 800 people cheering them on Saturday night at a viewing party in the Holiday Inn on Wolf Road, Rachel Cocca-Dott and Matthew O’Connor's cupcakes were crowned the best of four competitors on Food Network's "Cupcake Wars."
The Central Avenue bakery was competing for a third and final time for the $10,000 prize awarded to the winner of each episode of the hit show, now in its ninth season. Its first appearance was in 2011, with the second just five months ago, in April.
“It just goes to show that you can accomplish anything you set your mind to. It takes patience and persistence,” said Cocca-Dott. “Matt and I are very fortunate and we’ve met so many great people along the way. We look forward to what’s ahead including the opening of two new locations in 2014 and are grateful for the support from our staff, family, friends and our valued customers.”
“This is certainly a chapter in our lives we’ll never forget. It truly was an amazing experience,” O’Connor added.
The show pits the country’s top bakers against each another in three elimination rounds until only one remains. In addition to the $10,000 prize, the winning bakery also earns the opportunity to showcase its cupcakes at an event, in this case the professional wrestling pay-per-view event WWE Summerslam.
To celebrate, Coccadotts gave out more than 2,000 of its famous cupcakes during the viewing party.
