— Schenectady County will host its third annual triathlon this weekend, a race that will lead participants on more than 10-mile journey through Scotia and Glenville.

Billed as a day of wellness and community building, the Pedal- Paddle -Run Triathlon will touch off at 8:30 a.m. Saturday with a bike ride by the Scotia Library, continue with a running course through Collins park and conclude with a canoe or kayak paddle across the lake.

The event is aimed at promoting fitness and will benefit childhood obesity prevention programs.

In addition, proceeds will be used for other wellness programs sponsored by the Schenectady County Department of Public Health.

The first leg involves a 6.8-mile bike ride through downtown Scotia and parts of Glenville. At the intersection of Vley Road and Amsterdam Road, cyclists will loop around to follow the same course back into Collins Park.

Once at the park, racers will ditch their wheels for a 5-kilometer run heading east on Schonowee Avenue and then north on Washington Avenue. The course will then run west on Sunnyside Road and then loop back to Collins Park for the paddle course.

Rowers will then launch their canoes or kayaks and paddle a 1.6-mile, two-lap course around the lake.

The race is open to teams of between two and four people over the age of 12 and individuals who are over the age of 15. While the event is timed, non-competitive participants are urged to enter. All participants will receive a T-shirt, race bag, and other goodies. Online registration is closed, but day-of registration is available. An extra fee will apply and a race T-shirt will not be guaranteed.

Kayaks can be rented from several local businesses. A complete list and the cost of entry is available on a Web page at www.schenectadycounty.com.
