— Saratoga Springs Police Chief Greg Veitch is rejecting a public claim of brutality by his officers.

Guy Pierce claimed at the Sept. 3 meeting of the Saratoga Springs City Council that city police officers beat him that weekend when he refused to give them his name.

Veitch said Tuesday that officers tackled Pierce in the process of subduing him after they responded to a 911 call.

Police Chief Greg Veitch's complete statement on the Sept. 2 arrest of Guy Pierce can be found on the Around Saratoga blog.

Officers arrived in the Vanderbilt Terrace area around 4:30 a.m. Sept. 2 after dispatchers heard a man and woman fighting in the background of a 911 cellphone call, Veitch said in a stetement on the incident. A follow-up call to the emergency dispatcher directed officers to a Doten Avenue address, which is the area where officers said they saw Pierce, breathing heavily and sweating.

Veitch said Pierce refused to give his name and then gave a fake name after officers explained they were investigating a possible fight between a man and a woman. The officer suspected Pierce of lying and asked for identification, which prompted him to give the fake name again and then run away, according to the report from Veitch.

One officer tackled Pierce, who slipped free, and then a second officer joined the pursuit and was able to subdue him, said Veitch.

Investigation by police found an active order of protection against Pierce was in place for a woman living in the area where the 911 call originated.

Veitch noted Pierce received medical attention at Saratoga Hospital on Sept. 2 but was released back into police custody. While being processed by officers on charges of false personation and resisting arrest, Pierce didn’t make a complaint of police brutality.
