Yearlong tour in Texas, Kuwait for 2 Guard units
LATHAM About 180 members of the New York Army National Guard were honored at a farewell ceremony Saturday at Shaker High School.
Guard members assigned to the 42nd Combat Aviation Brigade and Company A 3rd Battalion 142nd Aviation will be heading to Fort Hood, Texas, and then off to Kuwait later this month. Both units are assigned to Albany International Airport, the 42nd as a headquarters unit and Company A flying UH-60 Blackhawk helicopters.
The troops will provide helicopter aviation support to American forces. The local units are among six units and 450 soldiers statewide being deployed to Kuwait. They will be under the command of Col. Albert Ricci, commander of the 42nd Combat Aviation Brigade, when they deploy to Kuwait, according to a statement from Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s office.
“These citizen soldiers were there to help countless New Yorkers in need during Superstorm Sandy, and now they stand ready to help their country overseas,” Cuomo said in the statement. “Our thanks, prayers and best wishes for these brave men and women who serve our country, our state and its citizens to come back to us safely.”
The units will be deployed for about a year, with nine months spent in Kuwait.
