MVP Health Care and Hudson Health Plan received state approval last week to combine into one company.

The two not-for-profit health plans announced in May their plan to combine, as an effort to bolster each other’s offerings and expertise. With MVP based in Schenectady and Hudson in Tarrytown, the companies have headquarters nearly 150 miles apart. But they have run in the same circles for decades.

The state Department of Health approved the merger last week, the companies reported in a news release issued Tuesday. Together, the two companies will serve about 733,000 members.

“The successful culmination of our agreement to combine our two organizations is good news for MVP Health Care and Hudson Health Plan, our members, our providers, and the communities we serve in the Hudson Valley,” said MVP President and CEO Denise Gonick in the release.

Hudson will continue to do business as “Hudson Health Plan,” and will continue to serve more than 120,000 Medicaid Managed Care, Child Health Plus and Family Health Plus members in Westchester, Dutchess, Orange, Rockland, Ulster and Sullivan counties.
