— Firefighters rescued a canoeist caught in rapids on the Schoharie Creek following a brief search Sunday night, according to the Schoharie County Sheriff’s Department.

Authorities were called just after 9 p.m. and told Alison McMahon, 52, left at 6 p.m. to paddle from Esperance to Burtonsville but did not return.

Deputies joined members of the Esperance Fire Department and Rescue Squad and began organizing a search.

Roughly 45 minutes later, Central Bridge firefighter John Diamond heard something banging against rocks beneath the U.S. Route 20 bridge spanning the creek and found McMahon still in her canoe struggling against the current.

Schoharie County Sheriff Tony Desmond said rescuers were in the process of seeking a helicopter to assist in the search before the canoe’s aluminum frame made enough noise to lead to McMahon.

She was evaluated and found unharmed and released from the scene.
