Area Colleges: Dutchmen strike early to beat Berkeley
SCHENECTADY An hour lightning delay didn’t slow down the Union College men’s soccer team, as the Dutchmen scored the lone goal just 1:15 into the game and beat Berkeley College (N.J.), 1-0, in the opening round of the Union Soccer Classic Saturday at College Park.
Senior Nick Vozzella’s pass to sophomore Carl Faber resulted in the game’s only score. Junior goalie Ryan Carter did not face an official shot and picked up the shutout.
The Dutchmen take on the United States Merchant Marine Academy today at 2.

BRISTOL, R.I. — Alex Wasilewski scored off a rebound of Jake Weinshank’s shot at 79:43 to give Salve Regina a victory over the Thoroughbreds in the opening round of the Roger Williams University/Turfer Classic.
Weinshank also scored the first goal for Salve Regina. Jacob Pate picked up the assist.
Skidmore’s lone goal by Andrew Pertsov came off a corner. Eli Kisselbach made seven saves for the Thoroughbreds.

COBLESKILL — Sage was leading the Fighting Tigers, 3-0, in the 63rd minute when a severe thunderstorm led to the game’s cancellation.
Under current NCAA rules, a game must reach the 70th minute of play to be classified as an official contest. The game must now be replayed from the start as a new game. No rescheduled date has been set as of yet.

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. — Cal State Northridge scored three second-half goals and beat the Great Danes in the season opener for both teams late Friday night.
Bertra Schonhofer, Brian Behrad and Chris Smith scored for the Matodors. Tim Allen and Eric Oroloio combined for six saves for UAlbany.

ROCHESTER — Mollie Gilchrist scored on a header at 82:37 to lift the Dutchwomen over Endicott in the University of Rochester tournament.
Caroline Gorka fed Gilchrist with a lofted 30-yard pass to produce the only score of the game.
It was the seventh time that Union opened the season with a victory. The Dutchwomen are coming off an NCAA tournament berth last season.
Allison Brustowicz made three saves to preserve the shutout for Union.

ONEONTA — Severe weather forced the cancellation of the Fighting Tigers’ game with the Hawks in the 10th annual Erinn K. Brozman Memorial Cup on Elmore Field. The game was officially listed as no contest.
The Fighting Tigers meet Utica at 1 p.m. today.
LOUDONVILLE — The Gators had their game with the Cougars cancelled after a substantial delay before the match started and another delay due to dangerous weather in the area just 20 minutes into the match.
The contest was suspended and will not be made up due to the Cougars’ travel plans to return home directly following the game.
FARMINGDALE — Three first-half goals carried the Thoroughbreds over host Farmingdale in the Rams Classic tournament.
Gab Lawrence made four saves to register her fourth career shutout for the 1-0-1 Thoroughbreds. Jen Wardyga, Arena Manning and Morgan Governale scored for Skidmore.
