High schools: Esposito powers Mohonasen past Gloversville
Gabby Esposito scored a pair of goals, and Mohonasen jumped out to a 3-0 halftime lead Wednesday in beating Gloversville, 4-0, in the opening round of the Section II girls’ Class A soccer tournament.
Alexis Dean and Reiana Opalka had the other goals as the No. 8 Lady Warriors won their postseason opener for the third straight year. Mohonasen (3-13-1) moves on to play at top-seeded Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake on Friday.
Gabby Kreppein scored a pair of second-half goals, including the winner with nine minutes to play, giving No. 6 South Glens Falls a 2-1 win over No.11 Troy in another Class A game.
Theresa Stinson gave Troy (2-14-1) an early lead.
South High (10-6-1) plays at No. 2 Cobleskill-Richmondville on Saturday night.
Junior goalkeeper Emmaleigh Maloney saved a pair of PKs in the tiebreaker as No. 7 Lansingburgh got past No. 10 Averill Park.
Caitlyn O’Shea had given the Lady Warriors a 1-0 first-half lead. Lansingburgh (6-8-3) tied the game on an Alexis Whalen PK. Whalen and Katie Palermo made their PKs in the tiebreaker, as Averill Park had a miss, Maloney made saves on the second and third shooters, and AP’s fourth try sailed over the crossbar. Lansingburgh goes to No. 2 seed Queensbury for a Friday quarterfinal.
Nicole Soultanian had three goals as Stillwater overwhelmed Holy Names, 7-0, in a Class B first-round game. Alexis Lockrow and Brooke Brinsko had the other goals, and Katelynn Brewster made six saves for the seventh-seeded 8-7-2 Lady Warriors, who go to No. 2 seed Greenville for a Friday quarterfinal.
Tamarac beat Watervliet, 7-0, as Maria Clemente scored three goals; and Chatham topped Cairo-Durham, 2-0, in the other “B” games.
