Malta is growing and Young can keep it under control

I am writing to endorse Cynthia Young for supervisor of the town of Malta. In my opinion, she is the only candidate for town supervisor who is realistic in her approach about how to manage our growing commercial neighbors while still maintaining the quality of life we’ve come to love in Malta.

Let’s face it, GlobalFoundries (whether you like it or not) is here to stay and so are all of the other supporting businesses that have followed. We have seen an influx of development over the last 10 years. That is not necessarily a bad thing!

We can’t lament this fact and continue to erroneously refer to our town as a “hamlet.” This type of “bury your head in the sand” mentality is not good for our town! As the saying goes, the devil is in the details and Cynthia Young’s platform is all about the details. She realizes that commercial development is inevitable, but believes that careful planning can ensure that this beneficial growth will allow the town of Malta to continue to offer the quality of life that we have come to enjoy.

This can be done by targeting high-density commercial growth along the Route 9 corridor, which will, in turn, help to avoid the suburban sprawl that we see in our neighboring communities.

Finally, the residents of Malta deserve a government that functions in an open and transparent forum. This means important decisions should not be made the morning before a holiday, as was the case on July 3 at 8 a.m., when the town made a decision to allow construction on GlobalFoundries 8.2 to continue 24/7 for 18 months. Surely this decision impacted many residents who weren’t even heard because of the timing of the meeting? Is this open government?

Cynthia Young has vowed to enhance the town’s functions in a more open and transparent manner. This is, after all, our town and decisions that are made affect us all. Open government allows a reasonable opportunity to be heard on issues that matter the most. Cynthia Young will work to make this happen.

I truly believe that Cynthia Young, if given the opportunity, will not let the residents of Malta down. I am voting for her for supervisor of the town of Malta, and I hope that you do too.
