Volunteers needed for the ever-growing senior population

Help! Southern Saratoga County is aging and with it comes the need to support older residents as they seek to remain in their own homes.

Clifton Park’s over-65 population increased by 39 percent between the last two census counts, while Halfmoon’s increased by 22 percent. Projected increases by 2020 are, respectively, 19 percent and 14 percent. Of those over 65, one quarter are over the age of 80, those most likely to need some community support.

Care Links of Southern Saratoga County was established to link those in need with those that care, thereby enabling persons 60 and older to continue to live independently in their own homes. Volunteers are the core of Care Links in the provision of no-cost supportive services including transportation, respite, shopping and errands, handyman help, friendly visiting, telephone reassurance and support groups.

Today, 32 older residents of Southern Saratoga County, your neighbors, and often their caregiving families, need your help. Due to ever-increasing requests for support, they have been placed on a waiting list for services, as we do not have a sufficient number of volunteers. Eighteen persons are waiting for rides to destinations such as doctor and hospital visits, outpatient appointments including dialysis, visits to spouses who are in hospitals and nursing homes, and shopping for needed groceries. Fourteen are waiting for relief through respite, a conversation with a friendly visitor or someone to do their shopping.

Can you help us by volunteering? Care Links is very flexible in its scheduling. If a couple of hours a week or one day a month or whatever time works for you, it will work for us.

If you wish to explore the possibility of volunteering for any of these services, please call Care Links Program Director Carole Beauregard at 399-3262.
