Area college football: Western New England tops Dutchmen in 2OT

— Senior co-captain John Krafick passed for 304 yards, including a game-winning 25-yard touchdown strike to Andrew Walz in double overtime, as Western New England came from behind to edge visiting Union College, 33-30, in a non-conference football game Saturday at Golden Bear Stadium.

It was the first meeting between the teams, and both are now 2-4 overall.

Krafick finished with 21 comp-letions on 32 attempts in eclipsing 300 yards passing for the first time this fall. He connected with Walz on another touchdown passing play.

The loss snapped Union’s two-game winning streak. The Dutchmen travel to Rochester Saturday.

Darnel Thomas ran for a career-best 165 yards and scored three touchdowns for Union. David Pope kicked three field goals.

Thomas scored on a three-yard run with 6:26 left in regulation to send the game into overtime.

Kevin Cook scored on a nine-yard run in the first overtime, and Thomas countered with a one-yard plunge.

In the second OT, Pope kicked a 28-yard field goal, but the Golden Bears then won the game with Krafick’s pass to Walz.

Union quarterback Connor Eck completed 11 of 21 passes for 134 yards and two interceptions. He added 50 yards rushing and was sacked twice.

Casey Muse recorded a career- and game-high 16 tackles, including two for losses and a 19-yard sack to pace the Union defense. Thomas Hayes and Chris Carbone posted 12 tackles each.

TOWSON 44, UALBANY 17

ALBANY — Terrance West rushed for 183 yards and two touchdowns as Towson defeated the Great Danes in a Colonial Athletic Association matchup at Bob Ford Field.

Towson (7-1, 3-1), coming off its first loss last week to Villan-ova, bounced back by dominating

UAlbany (1-7, 0-4), rolling up 573 yards of total offense. The game was part of the Great Danes’ homecoming weekend.

The Great Danes took an early lead on Jake Meek’s 10-yard rushing touchdown in the first quarter. Towson then ran off 24 unanswered points, including Donnell Lewis’ 38-yard interception return for a score and West’s 59-yard touchdown burst.

West punched in his second touchdown of the day early in the third quarter, a seven-yard run that capped a 10-play, 84-yard drive, for his 19th touchdown of the season.

Peter Athens finished 22-for-32 for 294 yards and completed a 38-yard TD pass to Spencer Wilkins. Darius Victor and Trea Jones also added rushing touchdowns for the Tigers in the second half.

Mike O’Riordan kicked a 35-yard field goal in the second quarter, and junior quarterback Will Fiacchi tossed a 28-yard TD strike to Jameel Gay in the third quarter for the Great Danes.

Omar Osborne led UAlbany in rushing with 50 yards. Fiacchi completed 17 of 35 passes for 126 yards.

UAlbany is idle this week and travels to Richmond Nov. 2.

TROY — Myles Allen rushed for 135 yards, and Dean Kennedy added 112 yards on the ground to lead the University of Rochester over the Engineers in a Liberty League game at East Campus Stadium.

The Yellowjackets improve to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in the conference, while the Engineers fall to 3-3 and 0-3.

Allen, a freshman running back, had 100 yards and two touchdown runs in the first half, while Kenn-edy, a senior quarterback, ran for 78 yards and two scores in the second half. Both had long runs, with Allen rushing for a 57-yard gain in the second quarter and Kennedy running for a 69-yard touchdown in the third. Kennedy added a six-yard touchdown run with 8:09 left in the fourth quarter to put the visitors ahead, 37-28.

The first half was a high-scoring one, as the teams combined for 44 points and 532 yards with the Yellowjackets holding a 23-21 lead. There were also two fumbles lost and three interceptions.

The second quarter featured 30 points on four touchdowns and a field goal.

Senior quarterback Jesse Maynard finished with 49 rushing yards on 14 carries and 180 passing yards on 9-for-19 throwing to pace the Engineers.

The Yellowjackets host Union College next Saturday at noon, while the Engineers face nationally ranked Hobart College, also at noon.
