— Johnny Gaudreau and Quinn Smith scored 13 seconds apart in the second period to erase a 1-1 tie and spark fourth-ranked Boston College to a 7-2 non-conference college hockey victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Sunday at Kelley Rink at Conte Forum.

Both teams are now 1-1.

Gaudreau, the junior forward nicknamed “Johnny Hockey” because of his dynamic play, beat RPI goalie Jason Kasdorf for a power-play goal at 6:24. Before the BC fans could sit down after cheering that goal, Smith scored to make it 3-1.

Freshman forward Jimmy DeVito scored his first collegiate goal for RPI with 8:58 left in the second to cut BC’s lead to 3-2. But Ryan Fitzgerald regained BC’s two-goal advantage.

The Eagles poured it on in the third period. Bill Arnold, on a setup by Gaudreau, beat Kasdorf 18 seconds into the third period. Less than three minutes later, Chris Calnan chased Kasdorf from the game with a goal.

Scott Diebold replaced Kasdorf and allowed Steve Santini’s goal with 7:57 left.

Kevin Hayes scored BC’s first goal, a power-play tally, 2:03 into the game. The Eagles were 2-for-2 on the power play, while the Engin-eers were 0-for-7.

Milos Bubela scored a first-period goal for RPI, which will head back to the Boston area Friday to face No. 19 Boston University. The Engineers will play their Houston Field House opener the next night against Sacred Heart, the team they beat, 6-0, Saturday in Bridgeport, Conn.
