— Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons/Saratoga Catholic edged Schoburg in a rematch Saturday, and put itself in position to make the Section II Class D playoffs.

Jake Van Patten rushed for 154 yards and a two-point conversion that stood up in the Sainted Knights’ 8-7 South Division victory over the Indian Eagles.

“I’m excited,” said Sainted Knights coach John Barber. “More for the kids than anything else. These kids have worked hard.”

Schoburg (1-3, 2-4) had beaten Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons/Saratoga Catholic (1-3, 1-5) in a non-league game to begin the season, 32-0.

“From day one, our kids have improved,” said Barber. “They’ve showed up. Watched film. Conditioned. They kept at it.”

Dave Haskell scored on a 19-yard run in the second quarter before Van Patten’s two-pointer gave the Sainted Knights an 8-7 lead.

Schoburg took a 7-0 lead in the first quarter after Anthony Monroe’s 38-yard run and a Connor Brown PAT.

“Our kids wanted that win,” said Barber. “Our offensive line played great, and our defense played great.”

Schoburg had a chance to win in the final seconds, but kicked into the NDBG/SC line on a field-goal attempt.

Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons hosts Hoosic Valley (0-4, 0-6, playoff ineligible) Saturday in its homcoming game, and will earn an automatic postseason spot (South No. 4 seed) with a win.

A loss, and a Schoharie loss to Cambridge (4-0, 6-0) Saturday, will also send the Sainted Knights to the sectionals.
