Racial chant mars BH-BL homecoming win over Amsterdam
BURNT HILLS Students at Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake High School celebrated their homecoming football win over Amsterdam High School by chanting a racially derogatory term in the closing minutes of the game.
The student section could be heard across the field in the fourth quarter chanting "Amster-ico," aimed at the city’s large Hispanic population. Coaches for the visiting Rams became visibly upset over the chanting.
Shortly after the chanting began, BH-BL coach Matt Shell went on the stadium's loudspeaker to tell students to stop or the game would be canceled.
After the game, which BH-BL won 49-0, the school's athletic director was seen talking to Amsterdam players.
