— Jacki Lyden, best-selling author and National Public Radio contributing host and foreign correspondent, will be the guest speaker at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center’s fall fundraiser — a lecture and luncheon on Wednesday, Oct. 23, at 10 a.m. at the Spa Little Theatre.

“National Public Radio’s Jacki Lyden’s career as a journalist has taken her to the front lines of some of the world’s most dangerous war zones and given her the opportunity to investigate and report on some of the most critical national and international stories of our time,” Marcia J. White, SPAC president and executive director, said. “Her reporting has included diverse locations such as the back streets of Baghdad, rural Kentucky and the catacombs of Paris.”

Lyden has been with NPR since 1979. She was at home in Brooklyn when the planes hit the World Trade Center towers on Sept. 11, 2001, and was NPR’s first reporter on the air from New York that day. She shared in NPR’s George Foster Peabody Award and Alfred I. duPont-Columbia University Award for coverage of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

The journalist took a personal turn in her writing with the memoir “Daughter of the Queen of Sheba,” in which she recounts growing up under the spell of a colorful mother suffering from manic depression. The memoir has been published in 11 foreign editions and is being made into a film, based upon a script by Karen Croner.

Signed copies of Lyden’s books will be available for sale at the luncheon.

The event will begin with a continental breakfast at the Spa Little Theatre at 9:30 a.m. followed by the lecture at 10.

Nearly 20 local shops and boutiques will be set up in the Hall of Springs for shopping after Lyden’s presentation. The luncheon, also in the Hall of Springs, starts at 12:30.

Tickets for the fundraiser are $75. They are available at spac.org and by contacting Linda Deschenes by phone at 584-9330 ext. 115, or by email at linda@spac.org.
