Fly-Fishing: Life-size statue of Betters planned in Wilmington

Fran Betters was a fixture along the West Branch of the Ausable River. Except during the winter, which he wisely spent in Florida, he was a one-man tourist attraction, holding court in his fly shop and cranking out flies designed to float high on the Ausable’s churning pocket water. Three generations of anglers made a point of stopping in to see him on their annual fishing trips in the High Peaks. He seemed as ever-present as the mountains themselves. Betters died in September 2009, but he’ll soon have a permanent presence on the river. Local residents have launched a campaign to erect a life-size bronze statue of Betters in Wilmington...
