Fire station land, parking lot sale on Saratoga Springs council agenda
SARATOGA SPRINGS The purchase of land to build a third fire station in Saratoga Springs and the sale of the last public parking lot on Broadway are both on the agenda for tonight’s meeting of the City Council.
Saratoga Springs Public Safety Commissioner Chris Mathiesen has introduced a resolution to sell the Collamer parking lot for $775,000 to Algonquin Building LLC, which owns the adjacent Algonquin Building, and buy a 14.48-acre parcel on the East Side of the city from Algonquin Building LLC for $200,000. The proposal is viewed by Mathiesen as the first step toward creating a third fire station in the city, a proposal that has not yet been approved by the City Council.
The proposed deal was the only one submitted to the city after Mathiesen’s department sent out a request for proposals in an attempt to find a property on the East Side that it could buy for no more than $200,000.
Profits from the sale of the parking lot are intended to help build a new fire station and add new downtown parking.
The council will also consider setting a public hearing on a proposal from Mathiesen to end alternate street parking in certain areas of the city during the track season. His list of topics for the meeting ends with a discussion of changing the city’s “last call” time in the wake of decisions by Warren and Essex counties to close their bars earlier.
The meeting will also include a review of the city’s proposed budget for 2014 from Finance Commissioner Michele Madigan and a proposal from Accounts Commissioner John Franck to expand the Beekman Street Art District Zoning.
