WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — A sampling of postgame comments might leave the impression that Purdue lost to Siena.

Terone Johnson scored 15 points to reach 1,000 for his career, and Purdue managed to defeat Siena, 81-73, on Sunday afternoon to remain undefeated, yet no one in old gold and black seemed happy afterward.

“Being 5-0 — obviously, that says a lot, but at the same time, we have a million things to work on,” Johnson said. “We’ve been playing a little bit too sloppy at times, turning it on, turning it off. That doesn’t work.”

Bryson Scott led the Boilermakers with 16 points. Ronnie Johnson scored 14 points and A.J. Hammons had 12 points and six blocks for the Boilermakers. Errick Peck did not score, but he had 11 rebounds and two blocks.

Now, here’s the bad stuff. Purdue missed 15 of its 37 free throws and committed 15 turnovers. The Boilermakers did enough to get by a young Siena squad, but a similar effort likely won’t be enough against super sophomore Marcus Smart and Oklahoma State Thursday in the Old Spice Classic in Orlando.

“We had too many one-handed rebounds, too many turnovers,” Purdue coach Matt Painter said. “Eventually, when you keep doing that, someone’s going to get you. You haven’t learned your lesson yet.”

Evam Hymes scored 18 points, Brett Bisping had 16 and eight rebounds and Rob Poole added 12 points and 11 rebounds for Siena (2-4), which had won two straight.

Siena coach Jimmy Patsos felt his team played relatively well, but Purdue’s superior talent won out. Purdue shot 50 percent in the second half to pull away.

“They’re going to be really good, I’ll tell you that,” Patsos said. “I don’t want to play that team in February.”
