WILMINGTON, N.Y. (AP) — Gov. Andrew Cuomo says the state will invest $12 million from the NY Works program to repair Whiteface Mountain Veterans' Memorial Highway, a popular scenic tourist spot near Lake Placid.
The Adirondack Daily Enterprise reports that the money will also be used to repair the toll house at the road's base, the castle near the summit, and an elevator inside the mountain.
Construction is expected to start in the spring and take one or two construction seasons to complete. The toll road is expected to remain open during that time.
Cuomo made the announcement in Lake Placid on Wednesday.
The scenic highway was dedicated to the veterans of World War 1 by Gov. Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1929.
