— Reconstruction of the Thruway between exits 23 and 24 in Albany is now complete, state officials announced Monday.

The reconstruction lasted three years and cost $99.7 million. The result was an additional travel lane in each direction between the exits that serve Interstate 787 and the Northway.

“The expansion between exits 23 and 24 will reduce congestion and make traveling on the Thruway easier and safer,” Gov. Andrew Cuomo said in a statement. “Furthermore, this project was completed on budget, serving taxpayers and putting drivers first.”

The project was funded through the Thruway’s toll-supported capital construction program, officials said.

In addition to the extra lanes, the existing pavement on the other lanes was removed and replaced. Some of the pavement was 55 years old, officials said.

Also, 12 storage ponds were built to improve current storm water drainage; 1.8 acres of new wetlands were constructed; new trees and shrubs were planted to offset those impacted by construction; and eight segments of noise barriers were constructed.
