Commission recommends removing Albany surrogate court judge
ALBANY — The state Commission on Judicial Conduct says Surrogate's Court Judge Cathryn Doyle in Albany County should be removed from office for presiding over cases involving a close friend, her personal attorney and her campaign manager.
The commission, divided 8-2, says Doyle failed to disqualify herself and took judicial action in nine matters from 2007 to 2011 involving lawyers with whom she had close personal and professional relationships.
Two panel members propose censure instead of removal.
In her response to the commission, Doyle said those matters were essentially ministerial and uncontested and she thought her actions were consistent with ethics rules.
Doyle can contest the commission findings at the Court of Appeals.
A call to her attorney was not immediately returned.
