— A woman and her canine companion are expected to recover from a violent slashing allegedly inflicted by a Schoharie County man wielding a sword.

Mark Dallas, 35, of Jefferson, is accused of attacking the woman with the sword in a house on Route 10 before attacking the woman’s dog.

Schoharie County Sheriff Tony Desmond said the woman suffered slashes in several places on her upper body during the attack Friday. He said she also was struck with the broad side of the sword. He would not release her name.

The dog, a bloodhound, had an ear nearly severed in the attack, the sheriff said.

Schoharie County Emergency Medical Services technicians treated the woman at the scene before the Jefferson Rescue Squad took her to Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

The dog was taken to an emergency veterinarian clinic and treated for wounds described as “serious.”

Desmond said a new home has already been found for the dog — a relative of the woman paid the canine’s surgery bills and agreed to take it home.

Dallas was charged with second-degree assault, second-degree menacing, first-degree reckless endangerment, aggravated cruelty to animals, fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon and endangering the welfare of a child.

He was arraigned and jailed without bail pending a Nov. 15 court appearance.
