Saratoga police arrest man after racino ruckus
SARATOGA SPRINGS What started as a domestic complaint at the Saratoga Casino and Raceway ended with city police firing a Taser at a shirtless man brandishing a large cleaver inside his Madison Street home late Friday evening.
Alex R. Mintzer was charged with felony counts of attempted assault on a police officer, menacing a police officer, reckless endangerment, criminal possession of a weapon and unlawful imprisonment. He was also slapped with misdemeanor counts of resisting arrest, third-degree assault and menacing, stemming from an altercation that broke out at his home.
Police were originally called to the racino after receiving a call about a domestic complaint involving a man later identified as Mintzer and a woman shortly after 11 p.m. About 15 minutes later, officers received another call about a domestic complaint in a Jefferson Terrace apartment involving a man with a knife who fled the area shirtless on a bicycle.
Investigators tracked Mintzer, who is familiar to the Spa City police, to his residence on Madison Street. Upon entering the home, police were confronted by Mintzer, whom they described as being uncooperative before retreating to the rear of the residence.
Mintzer then emerged with a large cleaver and began brandishing it at the officers, police said. At the time, he was screaming for officers to leave his home, according to investigators.
Mintzer eventually tossed the cleaver aside. A brief struggle ensued and police jolted him with a Taser, which allowed them to take him into custody.
Mintzer was arraigned Saturday morning and sent to the Saratoga County Jail. He is being held there in lieu of $20,000 cash bail or $40,000 bond.
