Field hockey: Beardsley scores overtime winner

Nicole Beardsley scored in the second overtime to lift Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake to a 1-0 Class B regional win over East Syracuse-Minoa Saturday at Cicero-North Syracuse High School.

Elise Zwicklbauer assisted on the goal, and Shauna Ryan and Brittany Ryan combined for four saves as the Spartans (14-6) earned their first state semifinal berth since 1987. The Spartans return to C-NS Saturday and play Brighton.

Rachel Aird made 14 saves for East Syracuse-Minoa (15-3).

In Class A regional play, Shenendehowa ripped Fayetteville-Manlius, 5-1. Claire Virkler scored the first goal on an asist from Anna Bottino, who also set up the next two goals by Anna Branch and Molly Hagen.

Casey Stata scored Shenen-dehowa’s fourth goal, assisted by Erin Buckley, and Buckley tacked on the final goal, unassisted.

Melissa Nealon made one save for 18-2 Shenendehowa.

Gabriella Gorgoni scored the lone goal for F-M.

In Class C regional action, Section III champion Cazenovia beat Hoosick Falls, 2-0.
