— Saratoga County sewer commissioners on Wednesday recommended approval of a $10 per unit rate increase for 2014.

“The $10 increase will be utilized for additional capital improvement projects in order to maintain reliable, consistent sanitary sewer service,” said commission Chairman William J. Davis. “Even with this increase, the sewer district’s rates are among the lowest in the country.”

The new rates, which are expected to be approved by the county Board of Supervisors during its budget process, will average $187 per unit. Actual rates will vary widely from community to community, based on the cost of the local sewage collection system.

The district has a nearly $16 million annual budget, with $13.7 million in revenue expected to come from the fees charged to its roughly 60,000 customers.

The largest individual customer, the GlobalFoundries computer chip plant in Malta, will pay about $1.4 million in sewer charges next year under the new rates, district officials estimate.

The last time customer rates went up was in 2010, when they were raised $10 per connection to cover financing of a $52 million expansion at the county treatment plant.

Under the proposed 2014 rate structure, local costs will range from $167 per connection in Mechanicville to $273 per connection for households around Saratoga Lake.
