NY Guard team to join disaster response drill
SCOTIA — Members of New York's Army and Air National Guard are heading to Maine to participate in a national disaster response exercise.
The 20 New York Guard members are on the 2nd Weapons of Mass Destruction Civil Support Team, based in Scotia. The team is trained to identify the presence of hazardous materials as well as chemical, biological and radiological weapons. They work regularly with local, state and federal agencies across the Northeast.
The Maine exercise runs Tuesday through Friday. It will involve assessing storm damage, hazmat identification, decontamination, search and rescue, patient extraction, triage, and other emergency-response measures.
The 174th Attack Wing at Hancock Field Air National Guard Base in Syracuse will also participate and send four Airmen to man its Mobile Emergency Operations Center.
